The list which follows gives an indication of the relative
popularity of surnames in Oxfordshire and the former North Berkshire,
during the period 1538-1851.
It shows the number of instances for every surname which appears 50 or more times in the
Oxfordshire Family History Society Baptism Index. Two copies of the list are shown,
one sorted alphabetically and the other by popularity.
The list gives an idea of the numbers to expect when requesting a search for all entries for a given surname from the Baptism Index. A search from the Burial Index will give around 70% of these numbers, whilst searches from the Husbands and Wives Marriage Indexes (for Oxfordshire and North Berkshire combined) will each give around 30% of these numbers. (Note that the difference between numbers of baptisms and burials does not indicate 30% immortality! It is an effect caused by population growth over the period covered by the indexes. There are more people appearing only in the baptism index by virtue of being born before 1851 and dying after 1851, than there are appearing only in the burial index by virtue of being born before 1538 and dying after 1538.) You should be aware that the numbers shown here are for a specific spelling of the surname. Where there are several common spellings of a name, you need to add together the numbers for each spelling to get an estimate of the numbers likely to be yielded by a search for all spelling variants. |
